The former head of Assassin's Creed, Marc-Alexis Côté, is taking legal action against Ubisoft, the video game developer he worked for 20 years. Côté's lawsuit alleges that his departure from the company last year was not a voluntary decision, but rather a result of a 'disguised dismissal'.
Côté, who led the Assassin's Creed franchise for 15 years, was offered a new role as Head of Franchises at Vantage Studios, a subsidiary of Ubisoft and Tencent. However, he claims that Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot, blocked his application due to his location in Canada, instead offering him a lower position as Head of Production. This led to tense discussions and ultimately, Côté was asked to lead a 'Creative House' for second-tier Ubisoft brands, which he saw as a demotion.
According to the lawsuit, Côté took a break to reflect and was told that he would have to decide whether to accept the new position or leave. He chose to leave, demanding severance pay, but Ubisoft suddenly announced his departure, claiming he was seeking new opportunities elsewhere. This move is alleged to have been made to avoid paying severance and enforce a non-compete clause.
Côté is seeking CAD $1.3m in damages, including lost severance pay and 'moral damages'. He also wants Ubisoft to lift the non-compete clause, allowing him to work on other projects. Ubisoft has not yet responded to the lawsuit, but Côté's experience highlights the challenges faced by employees in the gaming industry, where sudden changes in leadership and roles can have significant consequences.
