However, a dedicated group of enthusiasts in Northern Ireland is determined to keep this traditional form of photography alive. The Fight for Print Photography's Survival
Vittorio Silvestri, the club's president, expresses concern about the decline of print images, believing that we are "losing a bit of history." With over four decades of experience in the CPA, Silvestri has witnessed a significant drop in membership, from a thriving community of over 70 to a more modest group of around 30. He attributes this decline to the advancements in smartphone camera technology, which has made photography more accessible to the younger generation.
"The numbers are dwindling, and we're not seeing many young people actively involved in the club," Silvestri laments. While smartphones have opened doors to photography, they haven't translated into increased membership for the CPA.
Preserving History Through Prints
Silvestri emphasizes the unique quality of expert prints, which he believes cannot be replicated by smartphone images. "Phone images don't have the same quality or technology to print well," he explains. To address this, the CPA has taken steps to preserve their print history, marking their 120th anniversary with a photobook featuring contributions from both past and present members.
The book, a labor of love for Silvestri, includes 120 photographs, with two images from each member. To ensure a comprehensive collection, Silvestri reached out to former members, resulting in a rich archive of images and their accompanying stories.

Over the years, members have contributed their work to the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), ensuring that these images and their historical context are accessible for future generations. Despite the challenges, Silvestri and fellow member Robert Sergeant are optimistic about the future of print photography. They encourage young photographers to join the club, emphasizing the benefits of learning from experienced mentors. "There's no better place to learn how to use a camera than a camera club," Silvestri says. "You'll find someone to guide and support you on your photographic journey."
Sergeant adds, "Camera clubs have a strong reliance on printed material. There's something special about seeing your images in large scale."
