In the shadow of yet another tragic loss, a four-year-old boy's death in New South Wales has once again brought the failures of Australia's child protection system into stark relief. This is not an isolated incident, but a systemic crisis that demands urgent attention and reform. As a childhood abuse survivor, I find myself deeply affected by this story, and I am compelled to share my own experiences and insights. Personally, I think that the child protection system in Australia is in dire need of a overhaul. What makes this particularly fascinating is the stark contrast between the intentions of the system and the reality faced by countless vulnerable children. In my opinion, the system is failing to protect those it is meant to safeguard, and this is a matter of grave concern. From my perspective, the case of the four-year-old boy is a stark reminder of the consequences of systemic failures and the urgent need for change. One thing that immediately stands out is the pattern of repeated reports and concerns that went unheeded. What many people don't realize is that the child protection system is not just about responding to emergencies; it is about proactive prevention and ensuring the well-being of children. If you take a step back and think about it, the fact that a child had to die before action was taken is appalling. This raises a deeper question: How can we hold the system accountable for its repeated failures? A detail that I find especially interesting is the role of accountability. The child protection system has been entrusted with the stewardship of thousands of vulnerable children, but responsibility without accountability is not protection. Reviews and inquiries have their place, but they cannot continue to be a substitute for genuine accountability. If the same failures continue producing the same devastating outcomes, then the system itself must answer for those outcomes. The consequences of this systemic failure and unresolved childhood trauma are far-reaching. Rates of violent crime, family violence, addiction, homelessness, and severe mental ill health are all linked to the failures of the child protection system. When I left home at 15, I thought my problems would disappear, but little did I know that my trauma would follow me everywhere I went. For the next 15 years, I destroyed my life and the lives of those around me, all because I became the product of my environment. I wonder how different my life would have been had I been protected during my childhood, and how much less I would have had to overcome. To change the system, we need to start asking a question that has been missing from the debate: At what point will the child protection system itself be held accountable for its repeated and systemic failures? I believe every child protection decision should be measured against one simple benchmark: What would an ideal parent do? If an ideal parent would not leave a child in that situation, then neither should the system. The child must always come before policy, process, budgets, and bureaucracy. This is the standard against which every action, every decision, and every reform should be measured. However, it is clear that this is not the standard by which the system is currently operating. It certainly wasn't the standard applied throughout my own childhood. Until that changes, nothing changes. More children will continue to be left in dangerous situations they should never have endured, and Australia will continue paying the price for those failures through trauma, crime, family violence, addiction, homelessness, and mental ill health. Our children deserve better. Our nation deserves better. Because every child deserves to know that their life matters. Jason Blyth, a childhood abuse survivor and advocate for change to the child protection system, has shed light on the systemic failures that have led to countless tragedies. It is time for the system to answer for its failures and to prioritize the well-being of children above all else.
